FF: 5 Jobs I’ve held over the years

All these conversations about jobs on this post make me think back to all the awesome/crazy/fun jobs I’ve had through my years (excluding the current one, of course).

So here we are – 5 jobs I’ve held over the years.

1.  Hollywood Video – shift manager
I have to say, this was probably one of my all-time favorite jobs ever.  I started working here the summer before college and continued throughout college on my breaks.  I started off an associate, sitting on counters, watching movies, giving others my very honest opinion about the movies (which I have always watched way too many of).  Then, after some time (maybe a summer?), I moved up to be a shift manager – someone who opened or closed the store, counted up the cash, etc.  I loved every single moment of that job.  Especially that unlimited free rentals and free promo t-shirts.  Sometimes I still miss this job.

2.  Friendly’s – waitress
I had a love-hate relationship with this job.  I loved the fun environment, the awesome co-workers, and the free food.  I did not like the horrible assistant manager that once tried to grab my butt (I slapped him), the nasty food smell, and the 20 or so pounds I gained while working there.

3.  Used car lot – umm...car babysitter?
This job was ridiculous.  I got paid $10/hour to do my homework on the hood of a car in a used-car dealership.  The owner would have to go on long trips to pick up a car he purchased and I, along with one of my very close friends, used to have to babysit the cars.  If someone came in to test-drive a car, we were responsible for jump-starting it a few minutes before and letting it run to charge up the battery.

4.  Skin care small company – label applier?
My bff in high school (not Inna) and I worked in the basement of one of my neighbors putting labels on bottles of lotion and making up gift baskets.  Basically, for about 2 hours after school a couple of days a week, this chicky and I sat in a room, played music, chit-chatted and giggled while doing some mindless work.  It was a good time!

5.  Jo-Ann Fabrics – various positions
Oh Jo-Ann.  I miss you so.  I loved this job.  I loved the handful of elderly ladies that I worked with.  I loved the crafts.  I loved the discount.  I loved that it was in a mall that was walking distance from my house.  I loved our Sunday night movie nights (yes, I went to the movies with a bunch of way-older-ladies who made fun of me for hanging out with them).  I loved every single moment of this place.

Alright, let’s hear yours:
a.  What’s the funnest(that’s not a word, but I’m going with it) job you had?
b.  What’s the most boring job you had?
c.  What’s the most stressful job you had?
d.  What’s the most laid back job you had?
e.  What’s the craziest job you had?

  1. So jealous of the Jo-ann job!!!

    A. Dairy Queen-shift manager. Those people I worked with are still my bestest friends.
    B. Assistant Manager at Dollar General. A new DG had opened in our small town and they were waiting to close our store until we sold most of our inventory. Not busy, but my friend and I sat on the front counter eating toll house Elf cookies.
    C. My job right now, administartive assistant. My boss can be a pain, I do the work of three people and there is so much detail that it can drive me crazy. Luckily for me I'm only really busy in the fall.
    D. Desk clerk at Days Inn. Met so many people and I got to do homework.
    E. Harvest crew. I went on a custom harvest crew the summer before my Senior year of HS. I LOVED every single minute of it. We were in Limon, Colorado and I have never seen the sky so full of stars. We were down in a valley so the stars were like a dome over us. It was an amazing experience

  2. Oh my God, the car babysitter! Are you serious? that is the weirdest job description I've ever heard! I was basically a waitress my whole working "career" until I got a real job after college so unfortunately I have no good ones to offer up.

    a. What’s the funnest job you had? Walgreens, worked with a bunch of friends, it was a laid back environment and it was right across the street from my house.

    c. What’s the most stressful job you had? TA at a school for troubled girls, I would wake up in the morning crying that job was so stressful!
    d. What’s the most laid back job you had? This one, Library Assistant at a University Library - my boss is very kind and there's a lot of freedom in hours, etc.
    e. What’s the craziest job you had? Cashier at Bookstore of same University when I was a student, the line circled throughout the entire store when students came in to buy books. Good discount though.

  5. a. What’s the funnest job you had? Daycare "camp counselor" - it was a summer "camp", but let's be honest...it was daycare. We still got to go on a field trip once a week, and to the pool every day, though, which was pretty awesome.
    b. What’s the most boring job you had? Um...my current one? ;)
    c. What’s the most stressful job you had? Stressful, but I LOVED it. Probably my favorite job. I was a short-order cook, and eventually manager of the kitchen at a bar. When I was 17.
    d. What’s the most laid back job you had? JoAnne's? Yep, I worked there, too. Or filing at a car dealership.
    e. What’s the craziest job you had? Waitressing. I just am terrible, and couldn't keep anything straight. Crazy, though, b/c my horrible boss actually KISSED me in the middle of the shift (right before I quit).
