We started with No Cry and that took us a certain length and then we reached a point where he had to be allowed to cry a little (the max he cried was 15-20 minutes, and that was only once or twice) so we kind of went through two stages. (We're still kind of in it, too, since we only started this about two months ago.)
I don't know that we technically did the Ferber CIO method, although that's what I voted for. I tried to go in every 5 or 10 minutes to pat him, but it just got him even more worked up, so I decided to let him cry for 30 minutes before I went back in, and he fell asleep before 30 minutes every time after that. He was 18 months old though; I'm not sure if I would have waited that long if he were under a year. Maybe I would have. I don't know.
Puppy version here: With Molly we put her in the kennel on Monday night and she whined a bit. I went in there and told her to lay down and she did with a big dramatic sigh. lol However, now she doesn't seem to mind. She will even go in there and play with her toys with the door opened. The people we got her from started the kennel training all 8 pups when they were 5 weeks old so now at 7 weeks she was use to it. She will whine when he has to go outside, but other than that it's smooth sailing.
I feel very unqualified to take part in this poll as my 14-month old just started solidly sleeping through the night about 3 months ago. So don't take any advice from me :)
We did it at 6 months during our Christmas vacation - timing was important - it was vacation so I could drink a lot of wine! It really only took 3 nights.... Then we did it again for middle of the wake ups when he was 19 or 20 months - took about the same - but it was the middle of the night so it seemed more painful to me.... Ferber deserves a Nobel Peace Prize as far as I am concerned!
Joshua has always been a pretty good sleeper though he's gone through a couple phases. One when he was about 3-4 months old I believe where he'd fall asleep during the day for a long stretch and have trouble sleeping at night, and the other when he was cutting the first teeth. Cry it out always worked with us and only took a night or two of angry baby and tired mama before he was back to normal. good luck!
I dont know anything about the babywise methid, but we just let him cry it out... he was 9 months, and the first night he cried for an hour, second 45 mins, third 15 mins and by the 4th night he was sleeping through the night. =)

ReplyDeleteOops, I think I might have voted that we had to do it more than once, but we didn't. We sleep trained him at 18 months, and that was it.
