Friday Five - Return to Civility

We have this little "bathroom reader" book called "Return to Civility.  A speed of laughter project" by John Sweeney & The Brave New Workshop.  It has a small gesture or action that you can do to be more "civil."  I thought I'd share a few (well, 5) with you today because it always seems to brighten my day.

(these are all directly from the book)

1.  Accept the mistakes of others graciously, knowing you make mistakes too.  You never know when you'll need someone to return the favor.

2.  Argue a point, not a person.  If you disagree with what someone has said, don't regress to personal jabs. Instead focus on the point of disagreement.  Name calling and stereotyping is reserved for children, politicians, and the media.

3.  Listen when someone is talking, and let them finish their train of thought before you speak.  Really listen.  Don't just mentally compose your response.  you might learn something.

4.  Be generous with compliments.  It's wonderful to feel loved and appreciated.

5.  Turn over the remote to someone in the house who rarely gets to control it.  Turn it over, let it go, and keep your thoughts to yourself.  Decide to be happy with whatever the person chooses.

Hey, you knew I'd find something about the remote control.  I honestly think that one might save a marriage or two.

  1. I think those 5 are great, especially number 2. It's always very easy to forget that you are arguing over a point rather than the person, I'll have to remember that in future!

  2. love it :) I should dig out my old "book of virtues" that me and my siblings had when we were young and share some of those next time. It's a good one :-P
