Sleeping habits - the adult version

No, no - not that kind of adult version.

I’m talking about actual sleep here.

More precisely, cuddle habits.

Allow me to set the scene.

It’s 10pm and the two of us climb into bed.  Jon grabs his 3 pillows, places two under his head and one on top of his face.  He lays on his back.

I climb in, move both of my pillows off to the side, and snuggle up to Jon.  He shifts.  I wait and when he’s done, I snuggle up closer.  He shifts again and tells me he’s uncomfortable.  I say “ok, then you snuggle me.”  He sighs, turns and spoons me.  I snuggle up with my pillows and let out a happy sigh.

10 minutes later Jon shifts away.  I let out a frustrated sigh.  Jon falls asleep in 5 minutes.  I stay up for another 30 because I can’t fall asleep unless I’m snuggling.

Tell me - are you a snuggler?

If you’re snuggling, are you the big spoon or the little spoon?

  1. Hahah, I do the same thing to my husband, but he's such a heavy sleeper he sleeps right through it. I get mad sometimes because he doesn't cuddle back and he doesn't remember it later!

  2. Aw! Too funny! :) I love how many pillows you all have on your bed...how do you have any room?? Lol!

I like to snuggle initially but I am afraid I am like Jon and need my own space to actually sleep :)

  3. Oh no there is no snuggling in our household. TNT and I both want our sides of the bed to be our sides. If we do snuggle it's for maybe 5 mintues then I roll over. For one TNT is like a furnace when he sleeps plus he wraps himself all up in the covers. As where I like to sleep with only the flat sheet on me.

  4. I'm the little spoon, but we don't cuddle when we're sleeping. It's just too difficult. He can't get comfortable and I can't stay in that position all night! But sometimes Rob will come cuddle me when he goes to bed later than I do, so that makes up for it.

  5. I am the opposite of you: my husband can't sleep without snuggling, but usually I can't fall asleep while doing it (too hot and crowded). It's funny to hear about everyone's different habits.

  6. I will side with Jon on this one! A king bed sleeping on separate sides = a good nights sleep (minus when the dog walks us up)

  7. Omg, we are the exact opposite! I don't even like going to sleep at the same time as Ulysses b/c I don't want anyone touching me or even near me when I sleep. Spooning is only for when you're waking up. We need a king size bed asap b/c recently around 630, I wake up with the feeling of no space and look to my right to find him ON MY PILLOW! He's got an entire side of the bed to himself and yet his head makes it's way to MY pillow where I have approximately .5inches of space. Not cool.

  8. We are the complete opposite! Neither of us can sleep without cuddling, and we cuddle the whole night. We have a queen size bed, and have agreed that we'll probably never need anything bigger - even when I'm pregnant - since we probably only use half the bed. We trade off on big spoon/little spoon throughout the night when we shift, but I'm mostly the big spoon because when he does it I get way too hot - he's like a furnace!

  9. Haha. I am totally NOT a cuddler - especially in the summer when it's hot and sticky. Don't get me wrong, I love a good snuggle but not when actual sleep needs to occur!

  10. Hubby is the snuggler. Except, for I'm not sure I'd call it snuggling. More like holding me so tight that I can't breathe. Love the guy, but I need a little space when I sleep!

  11. Neither of us are snugglers, so it works well.

  12. The only thing I snuggle is my body pillow. I need my own space in order to get comfy and fall asleep. I'm not touchy-feely any time (unless, well you know...)I don't like to be hugged, spooned, etc.

  13. I am not a snuggler, I so need my space when I'm sleeping or about to sleep .. it's too hot to snuggle isn't it? especially in summer, even if the AC is on. Husband is a snuggler, he is the frustrated one, he loves snuggles. I always tell him his body is like a radiator, it's always radiating heat, doesn't work for snuggling. so no, no snuggling for us .... :)

  14. I'm Jon, Mike is you. Bungee likes to be in the middle of the sandwich.

  15. Neither my husband nor I can stand to be touched while sleeping (or attempting to). It actually works out quite nicely! :)

  16. Well, I like to snuggle at night and Adam does, until he actually wants to fall asleep then he rolls away. At which point I scoot over and become the big spoon. If I'm lucky, and he's the big spoon, I might fall asleep before he decides to roll away.

And then there are times when I wake up in the middle of the night because in our sleep, I have been rolled over and over until I am on the very edge of the bed, because for some reason during the last year or so he's decided in his subconscious that he needs to sleep in the middle of the queen bed. And then he's mad because I wake him up and make him move, oi!

  17. This whole comment thread reminds me so much of that episode of Friends when Chandler rolls Janice off the bed because he's trying to get out of snuggling at night. Anyone remember that? Classic.

Oh and for the record, I am not a snuggler at all. Tanner is all about the snuggles though. But guess who wins? (It's me.)

  18. Neither of us like cuddling as we're falling asleep. Aaron gets hot so easily and I prefer to sleep on my stomach, all spread out. I actually don't even want him facing me because I hate getting breathed on.

Sometimes in the middle of the night, if I wake up and he's facing me and I want to face inward, I'll give him a light kick and that'll be enough for him to shift and switch sides. He never remembers it. (Although he knows I do it since I told him.

  19. I am not a snuggler. I get hot. I'm more of a sprawler. :)

  20. Wow, there's more women like me than I thought. I am NOT a snuggler, and Chris is.

  21. I like to snuggle at times. Watching movies, in bed talking, waking up, etc. I used to like to fall asleep being cuddled (not NOT being the cuddler) and after pregnancy I just want my own damn space. I know a couple that sleeps cuddled so closely all of the time that they are happy in a twin bed. I mean, they have a bigger one, but do not mind sleeping in a twin. That is a recipe for a horrible night sleep to me.

  22. no snuggles for me!! i need my space!

  23. We are totally snugglers - although for some reason he has to always have his feet sticking out the bottom of the bed. We just bought "The Snuggling Kama Sutra" which is a hilariously cute description of cuddling positions... love it!

  24. This is too funny! My husband, who also has to sleep with 3 pillow (one under the head, one between the legs and holding one), swears that I trained him during the early days of our relationship to cuddle me every night and now he can not go to sleep without it! He even says "gimme my butt" when we are in bed and he is ready to go to sleep! I, on the other hand, couldn't deal with the cuddle me every night thing while pregnant so now I don't need it every night.

  25. Haha, I am laughing so hard at this. Then I got the shivers, and not the good kind. I like all of the space I can get when I sleep, mostly meaning no one NEAR me. It never happens. I wake up in the middle of the night with Jordan on my side of the bed and two feet of empty space on the other side. I am not even going to mention the three pillows he has to have that only end up being thrown on me during the night.

  26. Oh my goodness, story of my life! I desperately need to cuddle to be happy, content, and asleep...my husband abhors cuddling. At least yours puts up with it for 10 minutes - I'm lucky for 30 seconds of fake cuddling. To all those with cuddling husbands - HOW?!

  27. Sometimes we cuddle as we are falling asleep. Other times I don't want anything touching me and I just want to be! :)

  28. We snuggle for about 3 mins before I get too hot from being that close to him and he rolls over. I'm the little spoon :-)

    ReplyDelete
  29. I like my own space. I don't like to feel like I'm trapped under something. I don't even like the covers over my head, it's like I can't breathe!

  30. Kat! I absolutely love this post. I don't know what it is so real and relatable (yes, I know we're talking about snuggling). I'm a snuggler too. I like to be touching at all times possible. But somehow, in the middle of the night, I'll wake up and he's far away (and by far away, I mean rolled away and there's an inch between us) cue me being the big spoon....how do we feel about girls being big spoon?

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'm a Kat with a Jon and that's how we sleep, too :P Occasionally when we're really tired we'll fall asleep snuggling which makes me SO happy, but by the time I wake up he's way over on his side of the bed. :)
